Die Federkabeltrommeln dienen je nach Ausführung zur Erfassung von Länge, Neigung und Geschwindigkeit. Die Winkelaufnahme erfolgt z. B. über ein hochauflösendes mikro-elektromechanisches Neigungsmesssystem. Am Ausgang steht in der Standardversion ein Strom- oder Spannungssignal zur Verfügung. Die Längenaufnahme wird nach dem Seilzugmessprinzip vorgenommen. Verwendet wird ein mehradriges Messkabel, das ein- oder mehrlagig auf eine mit Rückzugsfeder ausgestattete Kabeltrommel aufgewickelt wird. Bei großen Messlängen sorgt eine Spindel-Rollenführung dafür, dass bei mehrlagiger Kabelaufwicklung exakt Lage an Lage gewickelt wird.
